As a firm believer in the power of grassroots advocacy, I am incredibly proud to share some monumental news coming straight out of Georgia. Seven local governments across our state have officially adopted resolutions supporting the Declaration of Peace and Cessation of War (DPCW)! This includes the City of South Fulton, Fairburn, Jonesboro, Atlanta, Palmetto, Stonecrest, and DeKalb County.
This isn't just a political milestone; it is a profound victory for community-led peacebuilding. Behind this massive wave of progress are two incredible, visionary women who refuse to sit on the sidelines: Sonia Tyler, Executive Assistant in the Office of the CEO of DeKalb County, and Dr. Maya Taylor, Founder and President of the Arrow Youth Leadership Council International (AYLCI).
Both of these leaders turned personal tragedy and profound life experiences into an unstoppable driving force for public service.
From Global Classrooms to Local Streets: Sonia Tyler’s Journey
If you want to understand how a global peace framework like the DPCW finds a home in Georgia, look no further than Sonia Tyler. Born in Paris to a Congolese mother and an American father, and raised in Saudi Arabia, Sonia spent her youth bridging diverse cultures. She grew up hearing about the devastating conflicts in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. She lived through the Gulf War, was stranded in Thailand, and witnessed the heartbreaking aftermath of war firsthand in Kuwait.
When she immigrated to the United States, Sonia faced a jarring paradox. While she left behind international armed conflicts, she was deeply shocked by the pervasive gun violence and fear embedding itself within American neighborhoods. Instead of turning away, she leaned in.
Through her work with the Fruitful Community Foundation, the Jane Goodall Institute's Roots & Shoots program, and The ScottLite Show, Sonia has spent years proving that genuine communication and honest dialogue are the ultimate tools for resolving conflict and building trust.
Turning Pain into a Concrete Legacy for Peace
In 2020, tragedy struck Sonia’s family when her younger brother was murdered. In the wake of unspeakable grief, she chose a path of radical connection. She stepped forward publicly and, in 2023, attended the HWPL Peace Walk alongside her family.
What she found there changed everything. Surrounded by the warmth, kindness, and genuine human connection of the HWPL community, a seed was planted. That single afternoon laid the groundwork for DeKalb County’s historic peace resolution just two years later.
Sonia brilliantly recognized that DeKalb County was already uniquely primed for this movement. The county had already established "compassion" as a core value, proving its commitment through tangible actions like raising the minimum wage for county employees, investing in education, and supporting local police. Passing the DPCW resolution wasn't an abrupt shift in direction—it was a beautiful validation of the values the county was already living out.
The Work Is Just Beginning
As supporters of this movement, we know that a signed piece of paper is just the starting point. Sonia and her allies, including Commissioner Michelle Long Spears, are pushing to ensure this resolution sparks real, lasting action. The goal is to move from a symbolic declaration to active violence-prevention programs and robust peace education within our public institutions.
