[HWPL] Interfaith Forum on Ethical Leadership Held in the Philippines and Indonesia
On November 29, the Interfaith Forum on Ethical Leadership was held online in the Philippines and Indonesia. The forum was jointly hosted by HWPL Philippines and IPYG Indonesia under the theme “Fostering Ethical Leadership Through Shared Interfaith Perspectives from Indonesia and the Philippines.” Religious leaders, education experts, and young leaders from both countries participated.

The forum was organized amid public concern over corruption in the Philippines and declining trust in public institutions. Representatives of Catholicism, Islam, and Hinduism discussed ethical leadership based on their respective religious scriptures and emphasized the importance of integrity, compassion, and justice.

Dr. Renato Taib Oliveros, a Catholic priest and peace advocate, referred to Christian and Islamic scriptures to explain that principles opposing corruption are found across religions. He stated that corruption reflects a gap between religious teachings and real-life actions and emphasized the need for inner reflection and a return to core moral values.

Prof. Dr. H. Muhammad Galib Mattola of Alauddin State Islamic University of Makassar explained that leadership develops through compassion, mutual assistance, and unity despite differences. He cited Qur’an 5:2 and encouraged cooperation among people to overcome conflict.

Karnapura Das, a Hindu priest of ISKCON, cited Bhagavad Gita 3:21 and emphasized that leaders influence others through their actions. He stressed that ethical leadership requires consistency between values and conduct and highlighted the role of education in character formation.
Participants stated that the interfaith discussions deepened their understanding of leadership beyond religious boundaries. The forum concluded with a commitment by HWPL Philippines and IPYG Indonesia to continue interfaith education platforms to support the development of principled young leaders.
